Lucy’s Love Stories

Great Waves #1~ Pretty early in our relationship, my gal Beth Patterson and I were at Lucy’s just after she’d returned from a road gig – a Scottish festival at which she’d bought me a medallion, custom-pressed silver. She chose the design for each side.

We were at Lucy’s the next day for lunch at the bar when she shared with me a document that explained the significance of the design on one side, a sort of Victorian love knot. It described the history of the knot, and that it was traditionally presented as a proposal of marriage. I don’t think she had read it thoroughly.

“So you’re asking me to marry you?” I said, pointing at the relevant passage. She took a close look, blushed (only ever seen it twice), and ran to the bathroom to regain her composure.

We were, in fact, engaged soon after. I still tell folks that she asked me first.

Great Waves #2~  I spent a lot of time at your establishment this past weekend for many reasons, not the least of which is your bartender/server Lindsay. Or Lindsey. I don’t know how you spell her name, but I’ll never forget it.

I’m going through one of the toughest times in my life, and I booked a weekend trip to NOLA on a whim, to clear my head and see some old friends. I got in around lunchtime and after checking in at the Ambassador, I went hunting for the nearest food place. Thankfully, it was Lucy’s.

I walked in, dazed and tired from traveling since 5 a.m. and absolutely starving. I ordered the baja tortilla rolls. Lucy mistakenly brought me a breakfast burrito that someone else had ordered. All I could think was “I know I ordered something in a tortilla” and started chowing down. It wasn’t until Lindsay brought my tortilla rolls to me, looking confused, before we both realized what had happened.

Unfortunately, the burrito’s original owner wasn’t too happy when he heard what happened, but Lindsay smoothed things over and we shared a good laugh. Then she still let me take the tortilla rolls back to my hotel room and refused when I offered to pay for the other guy’s food to help out.

The next day I came back to cure my hangover (thanks to NOLA nightlife), and Lindsay was there. She remembered me, and treated me like I’d been coming there for years. No matter how busy she was, she took time to exchange a story or 2, make sure I was taken care of, and truly made me feel welcome.

And wouldn’t you know it, my local friends that lived there love your place too, so we came back for some drinks later that night. My memories from Lucy’s are some of my favorite things about my fun weekend away, and Lindsay was one of the main reasons for making it so memorable. Please relay my gratitude to her. Thank you for hiring her, and thanks for running such a tight ship. It’s no wonder you’re a kickass restaurant/bar, and you can bet that I will stop by whenever I’m in NOLA.
